A broad overview of our programs…
Mental Health, Intellectual Disability and Substance Abuse Services – Highlands Community Services provides counseling and other mental health assistance to adults, adolescents and children.
- Outpatient Services involves counseling or therapy for a wide range of psychiatric and substance abuse disorders.
- Care Coordination is available in which a manager “coordinates” multiple services for a client
- Respite Care offers “cooling off” time for parents with children in crisis or when parents are temporarily unable to care for their children.
- Therapeutic Foster Care provides safe homes within our community for severely disturbed children to prevent permanent hospitalization.
- In-Home Family Services are designed to help families in crisis keep children in the home.
- Day Treatment & Education Interchange Program offers an educational day program for emotionally disturbed youth as a public school alternative.
- Behavior Intervention Services provides positive role models for children at risk.
Prevention & Education Services – are designed to promote the emotional health of individuals and help prevent violence, mental illness and substance abuse.
- Reconnecting Youth Program was developed to teach middle/high school youth skills for decision making, self-control, stress management and other values.
- Parent & Family Skills Training covers self-esteem issues, communication, family planning and discipline.

- Youth Leadership classes are provided for middle and high school students to learn leadership and project planning skills.
- Violence Prevention focuses on anger management, impulse control and empathy.
Substance Abuse programs are dedicated to giving individuals the tools to overcome addictions to alcohol and drugs.
- Outpatient Services consist of counseling and therapy for children through adults who are dealing with various addictions.
- Intensive Outpatient Services provides an intensive program for adult substance abusers who do not require hospitalization but whose needs are not met by traditional programs.
- Student Assistance Programs assists school guidance counselors with evaluations and referral of students with substance abuse problems
Recovery Programs offer services with a focus on strengths and abilities that will enable people with a serious mental illness, intellectual disability and/or substance abuse to live, learn and participate fully in their communities. Hope and self-determination play an integral role. Age for all recovery services is adults 18 and over.
Care Coordination manages treatment programs for seriously ill individuals who are adapting to a community setting. Two locations serve Bristol, VA and Washington County, VA
- Recovery Care Coordination – Bridge offers emergency services and care coordination to people with serious mental illness in selected Assisted Living Facilities.
- Mental Health Supports provides help with living skills for people in recovery who now live or wish to live independently.
- Psychiatric Recovery/Stepping Stones focuses on training in life skills for people with serious mental illness to integrate into the community.
Intellectual Disability provides a variety of programs for persons with mental retardation from childhood through adulthood.

- Care Coordination assists individuals, age three and up, with access to services in the least restrictive environment possible.
- Day Support Programs provide services that help individuals develop life skills and be involved in the community, from school aged children through adults.
- Family Support offers assistance for families who choose to provide care in the home for a family member with a mental disability.
Infant/Toddler Early Intervention provides instruction which is designed to minimize the effects of a child’s disability or delay.
- Infant and Toddler Connection is a program of services available to babies from birth to three years old who have developmental delays.
