Strengthening Families Program
The Strengthening Families Program is a lecture/activity based intervention designed to reduce an early onset of adolescent substance use and other problematic behaviors in children and youth. The program is delivered within parent, youth, and family sessions using group leaders who instruct lectures, activities, and role plays that portray typical child and parent situations. Sessions are highly interactive and include role-playing, discussions, learning games, and family projects designed to:
- Improve parenting skills
- Build life skills in youth
- Strengthen family bonds

How It Works
The program is delivered to 6-12 families at once. During each session, there will be a family meal, and then parents and youth meet in separate groups for the first hour and together as families during the second hour to practice skills, play games, and do family projects.
For Parents and Children 6-10:
- The program is delivered over 7 weeks, twice a week, usually in the evenings
- Some topics covered are: How to manage stress, rewards, charts, communication, family meetings, problem solving, and setting limits
For Parents and Youth 10-14:
- The program is delivered over 7 weeks, once a week, usually in the evenings
- Some topics covered are: Using love and limits, house rules, protection against substance abuse, peer pressure, family meetings, and goals
